FROM THE COMPOSER
Brahms arranged over 150 folksongs for various performing forces, ranging from solo voice with piano to a cappella chorus. A few of the arrangements, including this one, are settings of sacred texts, which the composer produced for his chorus Singakademie in Catholic Vienna. Based on a poem about the Annunciation in a famous Catholic hymn collection, it consists of identical settings of three verses exploiting ancient contrapuntal techniques the composer was then studying. The folk melody is heard in the soprano against quasi-canonic imitation of fragments of that melody in the other three voices.
