I love working with folksongs, traditional tunes, and nursery rhymes - as a composer/arranger, there are so many different ways to approach this rich source material. I'm also drawn to songs that have clear number patterns, or a sequential structure (One two buckle my shoe, The Twelve Days of Christmas, etc). Reading between the lines of the nineteenth-century song Dashing away with the smoothing iron is it possible that it sums up the way in which (some, not all) people find other people initially attractive, because of their clothes rather than anything else? This is only one of many interpretations, none of which are "right" or "wrong" - it's just what occurred to me! In this arrangement, verse 1 is sung by a soloist or unison voices (one part), verse 2 is set in two-part harmony, and so on, until the seventh and final verse, by which time the texture has expanded to seven voices. I hope it's fun to sing and to listen to.
