biography.
Jacky Jiaqi Liu (b. 2002) is a multi-award-winning Chinese composer, now based in New York City. Through Liu's linear, contrasting, and highly dramatic musical expression, much of his work reflects universal values such as equity, belonging, and love at the core of his compositions. Liu also draws inspiration from philosophical views and literary works that resonate with his emotions. As a composer who focuses on the listener's experience, Liu invites the audience to engage in reflection and introspection.
Liu was the winner of the 2024 American Prize in Vocal Chamber Music (Charles Ives Award in Chamber Music); the winner of ASCAP Foundation 2023 Morton Gould Young Composer Awards; the winner of 2024 Juilliard Orchestra Competition Arthur Friedman Prize; and the winner of 2023 Juilliard Gena Raps String Quartet Prize, among others. He has also been selected as the winner of the 30x30x30 Project Competition in 2024, undertaken by SOLI Chamber Ensemble. Liu is currently holding the Frederick Loewe Scholarship in Composition at The Juilliard School, pursuing his Bachelor of Music degree under the guidance of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner. He was also the mentee of composers Richard Danielpour, Lucas Richman, and Yihan Chen. Some of Liu’s scores are published at T.U.X. People’s Music, Sheetmusicplus, J.W.Pepper, and Midwest Sheet Music. Liu’s work has been performed across the U.S., Europe, South Korea, and China, including in venues such as Ehrbar Hall in Vienna, Bosendorfer Hall at Mozarthaus, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Paul Hall at The Juilliard School, America’s National Opera Center in New York, Concert Hall at Beijing Central Conservatory, and Tianjin Grand Theatre, to name a few. He has collaborated with conductor Lucas Richman and Jeffrey Milarsky, The Juilliard Orchestra, and members of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. |
