listen.about.
Without, with its alternating rhythmic and melodic ideas, wonderfully showcases the versatility of the brass quintet. It is a perfect exercise in ensemble independence, with its unique counterpoint and free rhythms!
Without was the last piece written during my undergraduate years at The College of Wooster in Ohio, and it is dedicated to my incredible professor and adviser there, Jack Gallagher. The piece opens ruminatively, beginning with solo tuba and slowly adding one instrument at a time. The reflective mood switches suddenly to a faster, rhythmically active section that becomes the central idea of the piece. This theme alternates with a lyrical, passionate motif played mainly by the horn and trombone. The upbeat theme returns once more at the end, and the piece culminates in one final burst of energy.
