MARCHING BAND STUDENT LEADESHIP TEAMS AND WHY YOU NEED ONE

3/1/2022

Vol. 2 | No. 17 | By Cesar Ocoro

The director of any ensemble or team in the marching arts world has a variety of responsibilities that one would say is overwhelming, but there can be strategies that make the administrative decisions implemented more effective, and more efficient. In this volume, we’ll be addressing the leadership aspect of a marching ensemble's environment.
In order to effectively run an ensemble, delegation is the name of the game. Where major responsibilities such as funding and safety will never leave the director role, but the tedious head counts or even sectionals should never see the executive. Here comes the insertion of the leadership, as they take the load off of the directors. There are many benefits such as: development of leadership skills among students, competitive motivation for roles, structure and organization from the ground level. The most important aspect of this implementation would have to be setting precedents, and breaking old habits in veteran members. These can hinder the growth of the culture you’re trying to implement.

For these leaders, the chosen few should be the exemplary members of the program, as it will influence students to turn to them for guidance. With the guidance coming from these students, it will further produce the culture that is being created. Although, an important aspect to remember is that these are students, and to put too much on their plates will result in a failure of the overall concept. This will be the first volume of many, covering this area. Overall, the implementation of leadership in new programs is an excellent way to create role models, and aid the directors in their overall tasks.
