Music by Robert Schumann / Ed. William J. Bullock / Words by Emanuel Geibel

Built around the idea of disparity, Lightless Luster is a beautifully haunting work from composer Robert Schumann, featuring a prosodic, rhyming translation by William J. Bullock. Utilizing full SATB forces, as well as piano four-hands, Schumann's work, depicting love as the liberator of these tormenting emotions, is deliberate and methodical, but moves delicately toward its gentle conclusion.

This partsong is the tenth and final movement of the composer Robert Schumman’s song cycle, Spanisches Liebeslieder (Spanish Love Songs), settings of poems by Emanuel Geibel. Composed in 1848, the cycle consists of vocal solos and duets, two piano duets, and this concluding four-part song. The text of the concluding movement depicts the pleasure and pain of love with several phrases describing paradoxical situations: luster without light, a glance without sight, death that lives, joy that torments, etc. As the music shifts from minor to major, the poet assures the loved one that only (s)he transforms love’s pain to joy. This edition’s English translation maintains the stress patterns and rhyme scheme of the original German.
