biography.
Jacky Jiaqi Liu (b. 2002) is a Chinese-born US-based composer interested in the intersection of culture, literature, and social justice. He believes that social recognition should become the basic instinct of a composer, so that most of his works find its expression in his reflection of society and humanity as a central point. As a composer who focuses on ‘sounds and colors’, Liu is also exploring a way of expression that requires the audience to engage in retrospect and reflection.
Liu has been honored as the winner of ASCAP Foundation 2023 Morton Gould Young Composer Awards; the winner of the Juilliard Gena Raps String Quartet Prize 2023; and the recipient of “Honorable Mentions” for Juilliard Composers’ AXIOM Competition 2023. Liu is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Music degree at The Juilliard School where he studies composition with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner. He was also the mentee of composers Richard Danielpour, Lucas Richman, and Yihan Chen. Some of his scores are published at T.U.X. People’s Music, Sheetmusicplus, J.W.Pepper, and Midwest Sheet Music. Liu’s work has been performed across the US, Europe, South Korea, and China, including in venues such as Ehrbar Hall in Vienna, Bosendorfer Hall at Mozarthaus, Lincoln Center, The Juilliard School, Beijing Central Conservatory, Tianjin Grand Theatre, Steinway & Sons, etc. He has collaborated with ensembles and musicians including conductor Lucas Richman, members of Banger Symphony Orchestra, producer Katie Jenkins, vocalist Brittany Hewitt, cellist Gaeum Kim, and pianist Xiaodan Sun, among others. Some of Liu’s featured works include Autumn Thoughts (2023) for solo cello; ‘Heart! We Will Forget Him!’ (2023) for string quartet; Why Can’t We See the Rainbow! (2022) for 8 women’s voices; View in Spring (2021) for a baritone and string quartet, and Crossing (2021) for orchestra, among others. |
