Grecia B. Melendez, born in 1997, is a clarinetist driven by the exploration of new music. A native of Hialeah and the South Florida area, she grew up surrounded by a diverse collection of music and culture. Grecia attended Hialeah Gardens High School where she had several performance opportunities throughout the county and state. She was also a member of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony, which provided her with unique performance experiences, including outreach programs, within the South Florida community. Her eagerness to learn and perform has allowed her to flourish in her studies in music.
Currently, Grecia is entering her final semester at The University of North Texas where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s in Music in Performance with a concentration on Clarinet. Her teachers during her studies include Dr. John Scott and Daryl Coad. She is also a member of the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, under the Texas Air National Guard, where she performs with the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and small chamber groups. Her time with the Band of the Southwest has allowed her to perform on tour in California and Oregon, participate in the New Music Reading Sessions at the Midwest Clinic, as well as perform locally in Oklahoma and the North Texas area.
