Frida V. De la sota​.

biography.

Graduated in Music from the Autonomous University of Baja California with a specialty in Clarinet. Born in Ensenada Baja California in 1986, she began her studies at the Center for Musical Studies (CEM) where she was a student of different teachers such as Malena Durán (Recorder), Luis Salazar (Music Theory) and Alexander Gurevich (Clarinet), and where she was part of the OCEM Youth Orchestra and other ensembles under the direction of pianist Ernesto Rosas. She later attended two years of music high school at the Conservatorio de las Rosas A.C. in Morelia, Michoacán and continued her training as a clarinetist under the tutelage of Cuban maestro Alfredo Valdés-Brito.

After pausing her musical studies to explore the visual arts and study a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Tijuana, in 2013 she returned to Ensenada to begin a Bachelor's Degree in Music at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California with clarinetist Emiliano López Guadarrama, taking her final exam on the instrument in 2017. She has participated in various orchestras such as the OSUABC, OBC, Tijuana Camerata, OCENS, Ensenada Antiqua, Joshua Tree Philarmonic and ensembles such as La Covacha Big Band, Ensenada Jazz, Delion Ensamble, among others. She has worked with regional and international musicians such as Santos Cota, Wilfrido Terrazas, Álvaro Díaz, Jarrod Radnich, Michael Blake, Carolina Mercado, Peter Ciglaris, Ignacio Baca Lobera, Juan María Solare, NORTEC, Armando Pesqueira, Stephanie Richards, Nick Lesley, Luis Cobos, among others. She has also participated in international festivals such as “Blue Rail” at UCSD, “Latin American Art Fair” and “Weird Hues / Crossover Festival” in the United States and national festivals such as “Jalisco Jazz Festival”, “Jazz & Blues Festival, Tijuana”, “Festival de Expresións Contemporáneas”, “Festival de Música de Morelia”, “Festival de Octubre” among others.

Her composition work ranges from electronic and experimental music to formal music, in 2019, four of her works were premiered such as “Crosstalks - Five Duets for Clarinet and Viola” at the Costa Rica String Festival, in 2020 she premiered 7 compositions such as the work “Why does that woman scream?; Sound poem for clarinet and declamation” at the Oaxaca/Veerkamp Clarinet and Saxophone Festival, and “Three Bagatelles for Mezzo-soprano and Marimba” which was the winner of the Baja California Festival of Composers and Sound Artists composition contest. In 2021, she premiered 4 works such as "Obertura 19" by the OSUABC in virtual format and the work "Telaraña" by the flutist Teresa Díaz de Cossío at the "Audiovisual Frontiers" Exhibition at UC Riverside (University of California, Riverside). Her project "Improvisation and Resilience for Clarinet" was selected by the National Endowment for Culture and the Arts in March 2020. Her work "Elegy of a Pandemic" was presented at the AIRES 2021 Mexican Contemporary Music Festival. So far in 2022, the works PIXAN; fantasy for 8 trombones, Feminist Fantasy for Transverse Flute and TICUAN; three stories for Chamber Orchestra have been premiered.
