biography.Dermot J. Walsh obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree from University College Cork. He later obtained a Masters Degree in Music from the Open University focusing on English Oratorio in the nineteenth century. In tandem with these academic undertakings, he also studied strict counterpoint and composition privately with the composer Dr Séamas de Barra.
Walsh has lectured in the areas of harmony, counterpoint and harmonic and structural analysis for many years in MTU Cork School of Music, where he was also an internal examiner. He was also an external examiner for Durham University summer 2013. Walsh now prefers to teach the above-mentioned subjects privately to individual students, many of whom require these techniques to obtain music qualifications such as those from the London College of Music, Trinity College of Music and the Royal College of Organists. He also teaches compositional techniques to specific students. Walsh has written for various genres, and a number of his compositions have been performed in Ireland, especially art songs and choral works. In December 2023 the Cork Fleischmann Symphony Orchestra performed one of his orchestral works. Walsh has also entered some composition competitions, and his choral work, ‘The Realm of God’, was placed 6th in the Malta International Choir Festival 2017. In October 2022 he was placed third in the Malta International Composition Competition for a work for string quartet. |
