listen.about.
Brock Willard’s foray into serialism is dark and ominous, with every section being challenged by altered time and harmony. This work is for any advanced ensemble looking to explore nonstandard time without excessive difficulty.
Darkbeast started as an experiment, an assignment given to me by my teacher; to write a piece using serialism. Before the composition of Darkbeast, my only perception of serialism was that it was random and chaotic. The piece uses a very clear sequence of pitches but how they are used is a clear deviation from the traditions of Schoenberg and his followers. Darkbeast is primarily inspired by the experience of playing an extremely difficult video game for the first time. The hero walks in the moonlight and goes through brief episodes of horde after horde of horrific creatures and angry attackers. And then, he encounters the boss: the big bad of the land. The piece follows this clear arc over its three sections.
