listen.about.
This dance-inspired tune for clarinet and wind ensemble is a perfect exploration of less-common time! Livingston’s rhythmic writing is complemented by his lush orchestration in this shorter work for band and soloist!
Several years ago, my wife and I joined an international folk dancing group. Many of the dances were from the Balkan countries, and many of the tunes were in meters not common in Western classical music, especially 7/8. I was intrigued by the way these uneven meters somehow felt completely natural, and I decided to use them in my compositions. I think they help me write music that is rhythmically interesting without being tricky or gimmicky. I have used them in several pieces for small ensembles and in one piece for concert band with clarinet solo, which I titled Balkan Dance.
